Do I Smell Something Fishy?

Hey Guys and Dolls!

I normally don’t make posts to comment on what’s happening in the beauty community- mostly because I’m busy and don’t have time to post, or because I’m busy and I’m not really sure what’s going on, and don’t want to jump the gun on a little blip. Admittedly I’m not an expert on and their polices or products, but I don’t think you have to be an expert to see something fishy going on. Also I really hate to see people taken advantage of, and through my blog I have a “bigger voice” to help start discussions.

There is a review and shopping website called From what I understand-this site is set up so that members can post reviews and such, and they earn points either by people “liking” or commenting on posts- I’m not really sure as I don’t use the site. As luuux members save up their points they can “spend” them on items, everything from Tech Gear like cameras, computers, etc, to Beauty Products, Shoes, etc…

Anyway, the website seems like kind of a cool idea:  Post reviews etc. and if people find them helpful, you get points that you can use to get some loot. I think it’s fairly obvious how this system could be abused, but in theory it’s a really neat idea.

This is the impression I get of the way things work, though admittedly I really don’t know that much about the website other than there was some controversy over some reviews and photos being stolen -I know a website cannot control when users steal content,  and they do have a little disclaimer saying:

“Please respect copyright rules when adding content”

However while poking around the site I found makeup by abrilliantbrunette on a this “beauty tip” post.  Jacqueline’s makeup had very little to do with this post. I don’t know everything- maybe Jacqueline gave this person permission to use her work. I hate to speak out of turn- but I doubt that she did. I guess the better your post is the more Luuux points you earn, so sadly it seems people are stealing images/reviews rather than creating their own content. I also don’t think Luuux really seems to care -in the offending post, it has a disclaimer where it says :

“If you feel this post is incorrect or infringing on the rights of another person or organization, please click the “Report” link”

However I could not for the life of me find this “report link”.  Stealing makeup artists’ work is nothing new, but I feel this site is a breeding ground for it.

Edit: Apparently the report link just doesn’t come up for me. Here’s a screen cap of where the report link SHOULD be:

SO that’s offense number one. What do you guys (and dolls) think?

Moving on. I did sign up for the site months ago after my dear friend -who shall remain nameless-told me it was really cool and to check it out. I totally forgot about it (again just one more thing to do/check).  Today I got an email from them saying they have some Limited Edition Brush set on sale for Luuux members for only $195. Wait, what? “only” $195?! Regular Price $349. From some brand I’ve never heard of. These brushes are OBVIOUS MAC rip-offs, yet are at the “regular” price MORE money than MAC brushes? With out the brush roll, all the MAC versions would be $334; with the brush roll MAC is $379, but what’s $30 more dollars when you’re spending 300+ to have top of the line, tried and true???)  Yes I realize that they are selling  this set for $195 not the $349 “regular price” -and don’t even get me started about the “regular price”, it’s obviously a manipulation to make naive people think they are getting a deal. I sincerely doubt the brushes are worth either price. If you want top-of-the-line quality and are willing (and able) to pay for it, I would suggest MAC brushes. Let’s be honest, the appeal of these is that they resemble MAC brushes. Granted it’s not like I have the Luuux brushes to compare, but I highly doubt they match MAC quality, and if I had $195 to drop on brushes I’d spend it on a few MAC brushes that I know will last for years and years with heavy use, not some unknown brand.

Here’s a link to the Luuux Brush set:

Some of you may now be confused   “But Cora, you use Sigma Brushes all the time? Aren’t those MAC rip-offs?” Yes I do, and yeah they are kinda MAC wannabes. I enjoy my Sigma Brushes and I think they make a few brushes exceptionally well;  others have seriously areas of opportunity. Over-all, I do not think they are MAC’s equal. Sigma has expanded it’s line, and changed it’s numbering system in an effort to stand on it’s own, and many of the new brushes don’t have MAC equivilents.  HOWEVER -It is important to note, that they also sell their brushes at a lower price point, so to me it’s ok that they are not as good, and I don’t expect them to be. Sigma sends me brushes to review,  and some I rarely use, but I’ve also bought a few brushes from them.  This isn’t to say Sigma Brushes are bad by any means, however this isn’t a Sigma review so I’m going to leave it at that for now, I brought it up because I knew I’d get questions, since this last bit pertains to Sigma.

OK back to the Luuux Issue- after a little poking around the site I discovered the issue was deeper- apparently around the time they launched this ludicrous set, they pulled the Sigma Brush Set from the items you could “buy” with your luuux points, and people were (understandably) not happy about it. Also their brushes cannot be purchased with luuux point, but with “real” money…..

This seems SHADY to me, what do you think?

Oh and for fun, I think I’ll post this on the Luuux site 🙂

Thanks for reading, I’d LOVE to hear your thoughts.

Edit: When I went to add this post to luuux I discovered it is required to upload a photo or video when creating a post- Say what? Nno wonder images are being stolen.

I know that someone on Luuux is posting as if they were TiffanyD. The have her blog posts and pictures and responding to comments as if it was her.

yeah it does sound sort of fishy like a it’s a scam in one way or another. also the whole “post and get points” idea always leads to problems like stealing others work, probably cause people find it easier to just copy paste others work to gain points than to actually put any effort into it! also the fact that you can’t find a report button it probably cause they don’t want people to find it and complain about what they find, it’s probably hidden in some weird place you would never think to look! sneaky!

as for the brushes they have on “sale”, mac brushes and sigma brushes well I agree if someone wants to spend the money expecting quality you buy mac brushes not copies but it’s different if you can’t spend the money then you pay less knowing that the quality will be inferior, doesn’t mean bad but there what i call backup brushes, i get them when money is low but need is high then once i save up money i buy the good versions! but what is sure that no matter how much i need brushes i would not pay almost 200$ on a no name brand!

Um…nooooo. I did not give this person permission to use anything at all which makes this the fourth person on Luuux I’ve had issues with. Luuux makes it incredibly difficult to report things like this which just proves that they’re dishonest right along with some of the people that post there. I don’t even know what to do either. I watermark now…do I really have to go delete my posts that aren’t marked? :/ people have posted with my watermark anyway. So Luuux pretty much let’s people do what they want. So frustrating.

    • December 18, 2010 / 4:42 am

I tried to report, but I couldn’t! I can’t believe people do that!! They steal and they don’t even care how much time we’ve spent working on these photos and blog posts!

I think you should keep trying to report whenever you can, and keep your watermark (at least people know where the photo is coming from)!!

      I’ll spread this message!
      Thanks for the warning, Cora!!

It’s a very very fishy website.
I started using Luuux a few months ago, & I decided I didnt like it too much, so I logged out & forgot about it. Before I had left I had set my settings so that my info (name, email address, things like that) wouldn’t be given out. So today I check my emails & I had 5 or 6 emails from people who had found my info somehow (Im thinking it’s Luuux’s fault >.<) & contacted me, wanting to exchange pictures & info. wtf? I deleted my account, needless to say.

I had the same thing happen to me! I made an account and I’ve only logged onto Luuux once over the summer, never posted anything, and last night I got some email from someone who wanted to send me their picture. WTF?

First of all, you’re my hero, Cora. That said…
I use as a free blog. I know that people steal images, etc, unfortunately I see it all the time on that site. (I’m lucky enough to own a camera and smart enough to credit images that don’t belong to me.) That’s the internet and something we have to live with in this day and age. It’s not right, but people that put images on the web have to do so knowing it might stolen or used for purposes other than the intended ones, and must take steps in making sure their images aren’t used that way. Once my Facebook profile was hacked and my photos were scattered all over the internet.
I have not been on the site long enough to earn enough points to get anything. I really don’t expect anything from them at all, as I’m suspicious by nature. If I do get anything I expect it either a knock-off or a refurbished item, you see where I’m going with this. It sounds too good to be true, and you know how that saying ends.
I was told that luuux does will delete posts that do not have a source link, and I think many users think that having a source link is the same as crediting an image, which we know isn’t the same.
I don’t know. I simply wanted a place to share my makeup ideas, tips, and my food recipes.

  7. December 17, 2010 / 8:13 pm

Another blogger wrote about this forever ago and I thought it seemed pretty cool. It was taking forever to earn points and I just didn’t have time to keep up. But from what you’re saying, I’m glad I didn’t keep wasting my time. I thought it would be a good platfrom to gain some new readers and get to read some awesome reviews. But sounds like everything is shady over there.

I got that email too—I wouldn’t never buy brushes from Luuux…seriously!!! They are proabably junk brushes!

It’s just my opinion, but I think the website is Shady and I don’t even make or post videos. It’s like your mother always said: “If is sounds to good to be true, it probably is!” That site breeds greed, no pun intended. Getting points by the number of posts just makes people do anything in order to get something. Don’t get me wrong, if your spending time creating good content maybe you should be able to get something for your time. But it just seems that people get very greedy and then their subbies get mad, and jealous, and start accusing them and eventually attacking them, and hating them even creating a whole website dedicated to it. This at one time was a really nice community, but somewhere along the line people just greedy and jealous. Thanks for speaking out Cora. As someone who is just a viewer and really appreciates all the beauty info sometimes it just seems a little too stressful to be here. 🙁

    Hey Cora!

I do believe that the Luuux issue is a fairly well known one. I have seen comments about it on a few blogs/twitter etc.

  10. December 18, 2010 / 12:00 am

The nail polish community has been furious at that site for months now. We find people stealing content from the web, report it, and the Luuux people say they’re going to crack down on copyright infringement, and then weeks later the same people who’ve been banned are back again, doing the same exact thing with no repercussions. Ask VampyVixen about it, I think you know her, right?

The site is disgusting, and in their opinion, it’s ok to post someone else’s content as long as you put a link where you got it. Sorry, but no- someone is profiting off other people’s hard work, and it is blatant copyright infringement. I firmly believe someone needs to teach them that they’re harboring thieves, and that it’s just plain wrong.

I generally try to avoid harsh words online, but I’ve seen this site sit back and do nothing, and it disgusts me. It absolutely disgusts me.

Wow! Thats insane. Its really sad that people can’t come up with their own ideas so they have to steal someone else’s. It just comes to show that people don’t have creativity anymore. Is there any way we can take this website down?!?

crown brushes do those private label brushes where they print your logo on their brushes. betting those are something similar to that because they have very similar brushes on their site.

hello dear if you do not understand something do not worry about my English is very bad.
I found your channel on youtube by accident and fell in love with you I got a whole day reading the blog.
I’m from Brazil and would like to contact you.

yeah i hate that they steal pictures. Im an avid member on LUUUX and there are people like myself who take the time to edit, watermark and write all of our posts. I myself am furious at the people stealing pictures just to get the points but underneath all the shady people on the site, theres an actual community and we all know whos dedicated in LUUUX, we dont condone the picture stealing cus it happens to us too.

PS Ive also ordered from them and they order straight from the website. Their customer service isnt all the best but i learned to deal with it. As for their brushes, i really didnt pay much attention to them.

So im sorry for this SUPER long explanation, i hope i didnt bore you or anything, final thoughts? LUUUX is not that shady, its just their are shady people there.

I’ve had absolutely no issues with LUUUX. Everyone works hard to report the ones who are offending the rights of other’s content. Some people on there work VERY hard and post extremely legit posts, and treat it as a real blog. Those people deserve it. I’ve already received a prize from them!

Thank you for sharing this but I would have to agree and disagree at the same time. I, myself, use Luuux all the time and absolutely love it! Yes, I do see some people take some photos and information that should not be taken but there are a lot of people as myself who share our own information and tips. Luuux staff also is trying to take care of this issue all the time . By blogging you can hope that someone will “stumble” upon your post and see how great you are, but on Luuux there is a chance to actually share your knowledge and meet some amazing people. If you guys are interested, you can check out my page and ask any questions!
    I hope this helped 🙂

This is a super old post but I just want to clarify a few things, so the feelings are less harsh. The site has since changed and it is based on how many people view your posts rather than comments and shares. Luuux had a huge problem with copyright and theft, BUT the people who stole their content didn’t get a thing. When you try to turn your points in for rewards the moderators go through and review every single post, any posts that seem off or fishy get deleted and the points earned from it disappear. They are real site users who moderate the page and you get updates as posts are removed, sometimes it’s just for having content that doesn’t belong in a category.
That being said it is definitely not a get rich quick scheme, it takes a lot of time and effort to earn points and many of the user do it honestly 🙂
Also you really do get the rewards in the mail, I’ve personally gotten an ipod touch and Ugg boots. The site is super different now though, they’re in the midst of changing their rewards to be more gift card oriented. There can still be a problem of copy paste posts, but it’s decreased a lot.
