WTF is going on with the Subculture Palette?? | Comparing Eyeshadow Formulas and Ingredients

In order to fully understand the issue people are having with this palette, I recommend you want my video. I think I’ve discovered the reason why, and it clear as day if you ask me. In the video I share swatches, and a demo of me using the eyeshadows. No time? here’s the TL;DR : The Subculture Palette eyeshadows aren’t living up to Anastasia Beverly Hills reputation because they are a completely different formula. The are missing key ingredients that ABH shadows normally have. When one compares formulas, it’s clear as day, that missing ingredients are contributing to the issues people are having.

below I’m sharing the ingredients list I found on the ABH website. This is a pretty simplistic blogpost because the majority of the info is in my video itself, this is just what I couldn’t share in the video for time/clarity.

First up, we have Modern Renaissance. Just about every shadow in this palette has a slightly different formula, but since Warm Taupe is the most similar in color to what’s in the Subculture palette, that’s what I using as a basis of comparison to the matte shades; for the shimmer shades I’ll be comparing Vermeer and Primavera, which had the same formula.

SHADE: WARM TAUPE MICA, BORON NITRIDE, DIMETHICONE, NYLON-12, ZINC STEARATE, ZEA MAYS (CORN) STARCH, POLYMETHYLSILSESQUIOXANE, ZINC MYRISTATE, GLYCERIN, SILICA, VINYL DIMETHICONE/METHICONE SILSESQUIOXANE CROSSPOLYMER, CAPRYLYL GLYCOL, CYCLOPENTASILOXANE, HYDROGENATED LECITHIN, ISOPENTYLDIOL, LAUROYL LYSINE, PHENOXYETHANOL, POLYSILICONE-11, TOCOPHEROL, MAY CONTAIN/PEUT CONTENIR: (+/-) YELLOW 5 LAKE (CI 19140), CARMINE (CI 75470), IRON OXIDES (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), MANGANESE VIOLET (CI 77742, TITANIUM DIOXIDE (CI 77891) <1512349>*CONTAINS CARMINE AS A COLOR ADDITIVE.

SHADES: VERMEER, PRIMAVERA MICA, DIMETHICONE, BORON NITRIDE, NYLON-12, ZINC STEARATE, POLYMETHYLSILSESQUIOXANE, ZEA MAYS (CORN) STARCH, CYCLOPENTASILOXANE, GLYCERIN, SILICA, VINYL DIMETHICONE/METHICONE SILSESQUIOXANE CROSSPOLYMER, ZINC MYRISTATE, CAPRYLYL GLYCOL, HYDROGENATED LECITHIN, ISOPENTYLDIOL, LAUROYL LYSINE, PHENOXYETHANOL, POLYSILICONE-11, TOCOPHEROL,

MAY CONTAIN/PEUT CONTENIR: (+/-) CARMINE (CI 75470), IRON OXIDES (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), FERRIC FERROCYANIDE (CI 77510), TITANIUM DIOXIDE (CI 77891) <1512350> *CONTAINS CARMINE AS A COLOR ADDITIVE.

And finally we have the Subculture palette:

Matte Texture, AXIS, DESTINY, MERCURY, DAWN, ROWDY, FUDGE, ALL STAR, EDGE, NEW WAVE, ROXY, UNTAMED

TALC, HDI/TRIMETHYLOL HEXYLLACTONE CROSSPOLYMER, ZINC STEARATE, CAPRYLYL GLYCOL, DIMETHICONE, ETHYLHEXYLGLYCERIN, SILICA,

MAY CONTAIN: YELLOW 5 LAKE (CI 19140), CARMINE (CI 75470), ULTRAMARINES (CI 77007), IRON OXIDES (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), FERRIC FERROCYANIDE (CI 77510), TITANIUM DIOXIDE (CI 77891) *CONTAINS CARMINE AS A COLOR ADDITIVE.

SHADE : ADORN TALC, OCTYLDODECYL STEAROYL STEARATE, DIMETHICONE, ZINC STEARATE, CAPRYLYL GLYCOL, ETHYLHEXYLGLYCERIN,

MAY CONTAIN/: MICA, IRON OXIDES (CI 77491, CI 77499), TITANIUM DIOXIDE (CI 77891)

CUBE: TALC, OCTYLDODECYL STEAROYL STEARATE, DIMETHICONE, SILICA, ZINC STEARATE, CAPRYLYL GLYCOL, ETHYLHEXYLGLYCERIN,

MAY CONTAIN/: MICA, TITANIUM DIOXIDE (CI 77891)

And then lastly, for comparison sake, Here are two shadows that are in the ABH MR palette, that are also sold as singles with an slightly changed formula. This is what I’m talking about, a slight change isn’t a big deal, but Subculture isn’t a slight change, it’s completely different.

NYX COSMETICS Faux Black & Faux White Eyeliner Review!

NYX Cosmetics Faux Black Faux White Collection

HOLY CATS! I haven’t seen any information about these anywhere so I’m super excited to share my haul, review and mini tutorial of the new at the drugstore NYX Faux Black and Faux White eyeliner collections! I picked these up last week at Ulta, and I’ve spent a few days playing around with them and I can now say I ADORE THEM! At $8 dollars a pop these are a great deal. The deeper colors are elegant and easy to wear but are definitely not boring, while the pastels are a great alternative to white in your inner rim or to give your inner corner a little boost.  Most exciting- There’s both a RED and a BROWN-BURGUNDY!!! *jumping up and down with excitement* These types of colors are common from expensive luxury and artistry driven brands, so it’s encouraging to see this launch available from an affordable brand! A few of the pastel colors have Colourpop dupes, but the CP liners dried up on me really fast, and I tend to prefer a liner I can sharpen. In addition to swatched of these liners, I decided to also try layering the Kat Von D Alchemist powders over top just for fun! Wow- awesome combo! Bust out those Ulta point, use a coupon and check out these liners!

URBAN DECAY LAUNCHES VICE LIPSTICK- 120 Shades of Lipstick Heaven!!!

ARE YOU SITTING DOWN? Urban Decay is about to drop it’s biggest launch yet- a total of 120 lipsticks,  74 of which are Brand. Spankin’. New. THERE IS A GREEN PEOPLE! This is not a drill!!!! A few weeks ago I noticed that the revolution lipsticks were on sale for just $11, down from $22, and now we know why. These new Vice Lipsticks will be $17 a bullet! Say what now? Yep. It’s rare to see a company launch a product that is less expensive than one it is replacing. Part of this might be due to the less expensive packaging, but I haven’t tried these yet to say for sure. When I get them in my hot little hands I’ll share, share share and share again. I’ll have to, there’s like a grillion colors.

Speaking of the colors- each retailer will carry 100 of the overall 120 shades- there are 80 core shades, 20 Sephora exclusives, and 20 non-Sephora lipsticks. I’m thrilled to see Urban Decay return to it’s roots with the less common colors like Junkie, Heroine and Perversion, as well as a few of the best colors from the Gwen Stefani Launch being made perm- HELLO Firebird! Come thru with your gorgeous self. Below is all the info I have at this time, I don’t have a launch date yet but I assume it will be soonish.

– thank you to Courtney of Phyrra.net for hooking me up with the info on these- love ya!

WANYE GOSS Holiday Brush Returns!

Hey Guys & Dolls!

So by now you know that I love the Wayne Goss brush line. LOVE! But there’s one brush I haven’t gushed too much about, because it wasn’t available so I didn’t want to be a tease, and that’s the holiday brush. Happily, it’s just relaunched at beautylish with free shipping worldwide!

The Holiday Brush is a large, pointed face brush perfect for everything from setting powder, to contour, blush & highlight! The tapered tip and precise placement of this brush are what makes it the perfect powder brush- it can glide around even the nooks and cranies of your face with ease! The ends hairs are left natural (never cut), which not only feels amazing, but it picks up just he right amount of product and then deposits it onto your skin beautifully.

I’ve loved this type of egg-shaped brush for years, and have versions from several brands, but since I bought this brush last year, I’ve barely touched the others. They don’t come close to comparing to the softness, quality, and expert way this brush picks up and places product. This brush is limited edition, so if you’ve been eyeing it get it while you can, you won’t regret it (just read the reviews on Beautylish).

WAYNE GOSS Holiday Brush 2Wayne Goss Holiday Brush after 1 year of use, Brand Spanking new, and a Wayne Goss 02 Brush for size/shape comparison.

I bought the Holiday Brush last year, and I can tell you that it’s held up beautifully, the hairs are still as soft as ever and I think I’ve only lost 3 in a whole year, which is like some sort of holiday brush miracle. After you wash and use it it does fluff up a bit compared to the brand new brush, but I like it better this way- you can use the tip for precision, the belly of the brush for placing, or blending powder. When using product on the tip you can customize the brush by adjusting your pressure to make it bigger or smaller. It washes and retains it’s shape beautifully, which isn’t something I can say of the other versions of this brush I’ve tried. Another thing I love is that this brush doesn’t “bleed” color every time I wash it- something that drives me bonkers about the MAC 138 brush. And if soft white goat hair is the thing your brush dreams are made of, it now comes in white. I need this right? PS- these make amazing holiday gifts (Feel free to email this blog to your Significant Other)

While we’re on the subject, I want to talk about a few of my other gotta-have-it fave brushes from Wayne Goss! Now that I’ve had some of these for over a year, I can confidently recommend these as my faves and brushes I use daily.

02- this one is great for wiping away fall out, setting the under eye, contour, highlight, and I especially love it with my Hourglass Ambient Light power. It’s like a mini version of the holiday brush.

06- I had to show three angles of this brush- it s an oval shaped flat brush with long hairs that make it great as both a shader and a crease defining blending brush. This one is so lovely and versatile, and I don’t have anything else quite like it.

07-this brush is really teeny tiny! It’s small size, shape, flatness, and the natural hairs make this my favorite lip brush. Even though synthetic brushes are *technically* better for cream products, natural seems to work better for me.

14- this brush though! When you first see it I know what you’re thinking- what’s this thin weird brush going to do for me? Plenty. This brush fluffs up a little bit with use- but it isn’t very dense, which makes it perfect for applying blush, bronzer or even your setting powder with a light hand.

17-this is my favorite brush for highlight or a wash of color on the lid. It’s wide enough to cover a large area in no time, but it’s thin like a shader brush and never picks up too much product.

18- this is literally one of the best shaders I’ve ever used. I feel like a broken record but it picks up product perfectly, and is an expert brush for both packing color on and blending.

19- Wayne Goss’s brush line has a lot of blending brushes- a lot. But this one is my favorite, especially for a lighter everyday eye. it’s just the perfect size to rock a few shades in my socket line and call it a day.

CHARLOTTE TILBURY HOLIDAY COLLECTION REVIEW, DUPES, SWATCHES

Hi Guys & Dolls!

Today I want to share with you my swatches and thoughts on the new Charlotte Tilbury Holiday collection. The collection is comprised of a trio of mini lipsticks in the shades Bitch Perfect, Penelope Pink, and So Marilyn, a full sized lipgloss and lipstick in LSD, and Confession and a gorgeous eyeshadow palette called Fallen Angel.

Fallen Angel Palette $65

charlotte-tilbury-limited-edition-fallen-angel-luxury-palette

IMG_7870

The eyeshadow palette is gorgeous- the shimmer and pigmentation of Charlotte Tilbury’s eyeshadows never ceases to blow me away! They come out with colors that at first glance seems basic, but load it with beautiful shimmer, excellent pigmentation, and make it buttery smooth. Each eyeshadow has a beautiful star embossing that honestly made me not want to use it at first- it was just too beautiful to ruin! But of course I have used it now and you can watch the tutorial here.

While this palette is fabulous, I’d be careless not to mention that the the price for what you get is basically ridiculous. Charlotte Tilbury palettes are already on the smaller size, and on the pricey/luxury side at $52 for 5.2 gm of product. This limited edition palette is $65 for 2.8. TWO POINT EIGHT! That’s less than a gram per eyeshadow. Dude, that’s $13 dollars more for just a smidge over half the amount of product you normally get. I can understand people who love luxury and are willing to pay more, but for the amount of product to be so much less makes me feel like the consumer is getting the wrong end of the deal. Especially with such an easily dupable palette. The if the $65 price tag is out of your budget, I’ve added a list of dupes.

Shadow 1 is a pink based warm beige/champagne color.  Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette Booty Call is lighter, less complex; Lorac Pro 2 Palette Beige is less peach, less complex; MAC Extra Dimension A Natural Flirt is the closest match, but still peachier, brighter.

Shadow 2 is a brown based silver taupe. it looks to me like a silver-brown duochrome; depending on the angle it will look more silver or more brown. There are a grillion dupes/subs out there, but here’s a few that come the closest: Urban Decay Verve is more silver, layer with a brown for a similar effect; Lorac Pro 2 Palette Silver, Mocha and Snow can be layered for a similar color. MAC Satin Taupe is more mauve, Wet ‘n’ wild Nutty is the closest- and only 2 bucks!

Shadow 3 is a shimmery red based brown with shimmer flecks. Urban decay Snakebite is more golden, Lorac Mocha (pro 2) is lighter and more pink, Urban Decay Factory(naked 3) is slightly lighter, pinker; MAC Mulch is the closest but slightly redder.

Shadow 4 is a soft satin black. Applied wet it’s quite deep, but applied dry is more of a deep gray. Lorac Black (pro2) is the closest, otherwise most blacks are much blacker than this. And now I feel like Quinn Morgendorffer (Daria, do these blacks match?)

K.I.S.S.I.N.G Mini Lipstick Charms $39charlotte-tilbury-kissing-mini-lipstick-charms

My favorite of this collection is the Mini Lipstick Trio, since I adore mini lipsticks and the quality, color and names of these are perfection. At $39 for 3g it’s not a bad value since one full size lipstick is $32 for 3g from the brand- you’re basically paying $7 more to have 3 colors instead of one and I think that’s fair. I already own and love Bitch Perfect and Penelope Pink, so I’ll use those minis as purse lippies, while So Marilyn is a lush new addition to my red lipstick obsession.

Bitch Perfect LipstickBITCH PREFECT CHARLOTTE TILBURY

This is one of my all-time fave lippies, a perfect nude. Smooth Texture. Peachy nude. The Name. I swoon!

Penelope Pink Lipstick

Penelope Pink Charlotte Tilbury

This one is more of a traditional nude one me. It has a beige undertone, so I like to pair it with lipliners like MAC dervish to pink it up a bit for my own tastes.

So Marilyn Lipstick

So Marilyn Charlotte Tilbury

Is this real life? This cool toned cream red is absolutely perfect. Creamy, smooth, and lush looking on the lips.

Confession Lipstick and LSD LipglossIMG_7884

Confession Lipstick

charlotte-tilbury-kissing-confession

Confession Charlotte Tilbury

Deeper and shimmery compared to Bitch Perfect. On someone with a golden undertone it would be bangin’! This is the same price as the regular CT lipsticks, $32 for 3g of product.

LSD (Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds) Lip Luster gloss

charlotte-tilbury-lip-lustre-lucy-in-the-sky-with-diamonds

LSD Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds

I love the name of this lipgloss. LOVE <3 The color is very pretty on the lips- a veil of golden gloss. It would go great with any of the lipsticks here, but it’s also perfect on it’s own like in the above swatch. This is th same price at the regular CT lipgloss, $22.
