FAQ

Are You a makeup artist/Pro Makeup artist?

Yes, I am a working makeup artist! If you live in the San Francisco Bay Area (or are willing to pay for my travel & lodging) and would like to book me please email me at requests4cora@yahoo.com. I specialize in makeup lessons, makeup parties, wedding makeup and have worked in film and television. I also offer personal lessons via Skype or Facetime.

Did you go to school for makeup?

I’m a self-taught makeup artist, and I learned every thing I know through practice, Youtube, and working for various makeup lines. It’s about practice, practice practice. If you’re interested in becoming a makeup artist I think a great way to get your start is working for a makeup counter or store. It will give you plenty of hands-on training and help you decide if this is something you’ll truly enjoy as a career or simply as a hobby. I never attended a formal makeup school, however this doesn’t mean that I won’t at some point if only to brush up on my skills. In terms of a formal education, I studied fashion design in high school, and majored in Interior Design in college.

How did you get so popular on youtube/any advice for someone starting out blogging/on youutbe?

The best advice I can give is to just be yourself. I did not start doing this with aspirations to become popular at all, that wasn’t even a “thing” when I started back in 2007! When I started the whole community was maybe 20-30 people making videos- if it was even that many. Overtime it has developed from a relaxed hobby into a true business for both myself and so many others- and it’s truly a wonderful and rewarding career. To be successful you must treat this like the job it is- unless you truly just want to do it for fun- then rock on! My advice, is just be yourself, make the best videos you can, and have fun!

What to you use to Edit your videos?

Videos made after January 2014 are edited with imovie, videos Prior to Jan. 2014 were edited using Sony Vegas. I Film my videos using a Canon T4i.

What Hair Dye do you use?

The simplest way to answer this is to refer you to my hair dying videos:

Does your hair get damaged with all of the dying?/Why does your hair look so healthy even though you dye it all the time?

My hair is straight, fine, & smooth/flat by nature, so bounces back from damage faster than most hair types. It is damaged, but not as much as /doesn’t show it as obvious as other hair types. It’s naturally dark-blond so when I bleach it I only leave the bleach on for about 15 minutes. I only re-touch the roots, so I’m not constantly bleaching my hair, and I only re-bleach about every 6-8 weeks. The black is tone-on tone, (level 10 developer) so only minor damage. The pink dye is completely non-damaging, in fact it makes it look healthier/shinier.

Can You do a Tutorial for my prom/dance/birthday/wedding/other specific event?:

Unfortunately I receive a lot of requests and I simply cannot do something that is so specific to one person. As part of my work as a makeup artist I do offer personalized lessons via Skype or Facetime for those not located near me.

I can’t afford expensive makeup Brushes, what do you recommend?:

I really think that the Sonia Kashuk line of brushes from Target are great. I especially like the white handled ones for their affordability (1.99-9.99) and durability. They’re soft  and many of these are favorites of mine over more expensive brushes.  Another great inexpensive option are the Real Techniques brushes, Art Brushes (like from Michaels or Hobby Lobby).

And I do not think I have ever seen better skin and would be hardpressed to find prettier eyes in color and shape. Good job on the tutorials! Keep it up.

  2. First off, I would just like to tell you that I LOVE your YouTube videos, and second, I just bought my first eyeshadow palette off of ebay, and I was wondering if the no-name brands really can be trusted. (My mom was worried.)

  7. Hi, I just watched your tutorial where you did three looks in one. Your last look was a pin up look that I loved. I wanted to go to that website you said http://www.mscuppycakes.com/ but i can’t find it, and nothing loads when I go to that address. Do you know if the site went down, or if it just the wrong url. Please let me know! I loved all your make up!

  8. Hi, first off i’d just like to say your hair is awesome!

I’ve been wanting to dye my hair red for a while now, and i’m not sure how to go about it. I’ve heard so many different things, why not to bleach it, I should go to a salon, it’ll damage my hair and etc.

My hair is currently really dark brown/faded black. I did plan to bleach it, dye it light brown & then dye it red but i’m not sure now! Would the light brown hair dye be effected by the orange from the bleach?

What do you think it the best way to go from black to red? I think you’re the best person to ask so any advice you have i’ll be grateful!

    🙂

    • I’m no beauty guru, but I do my fair share of dying my hair. I recently dyed my hair red, and what I used was a hair color made specifically for dark hair. I got it at Sally Beauty Supply and it was pretty cheap. When I decide to dye my hair I always go to Sally’s and either speak to someone there or do some investigating myself. The employees there can help to show you what you need to develop the dye and what tools you’ll need as a home dyer. I hope this helps a little bit!

  9. Hello Cora! I first want to say that I love watching your tutorials and enjoy all your product reviews. They are very helpful. I recently dyed my hair red (like crayon red) and I absolutely love it. I love to be adventurous in my hair color and cuts. I know that from the videos I’ve watched of you that you had the same color red hair and transitioned to pink at some point. I’m wondering how you did that, and what products you used. I used a permanent color (red) from Sally’s specifically for dark hair (which I had at the time I dyed my hair). I eventually want to go pink and at some point purple. I do need to give my hair time to rest, but I was wondering in the mean time if you could give me any tips or maybe some products you used and liked. Thank you so much for all your help and thanks for being a true inspiration to so many apiring cosmetologists <3

  10. I just want to say I came across your channel and you seem to be such a honest , fun loving person and you truly make the subscriber feel like you are doing this for them, not for popularity. You have inspired me to make my own channel. I am so nervous!!!

I know that you must be like super duper busy but I am wondering if you could give me some tips on decorating my page. I was wondering how did you get the picture up below your profile information on youtube? Also, how did you manage to put up the marquee. I don’t have one but maybe one day I will and wasn’t sure how to put it up there.

  11. I love all that you do! I’ve learned how to apply my makeup better now thanks to you! I was just wondering, in your haul vids about MAC collections, you’ve said a few times that you’re able to get MAC collections products before they come out, do you work at MAC or are you still with Sephora?

  12. I want to ordet some lipstick online from MAC. Im just scared of paying $15 for the lipstick plus shipping than when i get it, its melted.

My question is have you ordered lipstick online? & was it melted?

    Help.. LoL

    BTW love your videos!!

  13. Just followed the link here to your website from a long line of links from Youtube. Absolutely love your tutorials, your ideas and your backstory!

Living in New Zealand means that we don’t have too many over the top personalities to draw inspiration from and too many people are way to scared to put themselves out there in terms of make-up and fashion! Which brings me to my point, love the mantra:
Be Vintage or Tacky, Just be yourself.

With help from your tutorials, I am going to be the best version of myself.

    Thanks a million!

  16. I found you on Beautylish (I’m Lindsay C./beautybylindsay)…Sinderella was my first Cora experience and I think you are so fantastic and authentic. Honesty is beautiful! Keep up the good work, and thank you for your advice to blogger/video beginners!! (www.beautybylindsay.blogspot.com) xoxo

  17. Hi Cora!

Firstly, I think you’re amazing and I love your videos!

Secondly, although it may sound a little silly, how do you put your foundation on? A brush, sponge or airbrush? And what brand and shade?

    Thanks x

  18. Hi Cora! <3
I have to say, i absolutely love your videos and how detailed your tutorials are. i'm somewhat of a tom-boy and you make being girly very easy for me <3
i did have a question for you though: unfortunately for me, every foundation i've tried (no matter how little i put on) always looks very ashy and dry on my skin. i drink lots of water and when i dont wear make-up, my skin is fine. ive been on a mission to find the perfect foundation for quite some time, all i want is a nice foundation that will polish up my skin and make me look even toned.
any brands you recommend? the latest foundation ive tried is revlon's photo ready airbrush mousse foundation. help!

    • Rosie O! – Are you using moisturizer on your skin before you apply foundation? If not I recommend trying that and see if that gives you better results. Get moisturizer based on your skin type: oily, combination, or dry. The brand really doesn’t matter, get what you can afford. (Make sure it’s facial moisturizer, not body moisturizer which is thicker and could make you break out.) You can use Oil of Olay or spend more at a department store skin care counter. Apply moisturizer after washing your face, wait around 10-15 minutes before applying foundation. If you are already using moisturizer then I would recommend trying a different foundation. I’ve found drug store brands tend to be more drying than more expensive brands, with the notable exception being Neutrogena Healthy Skin foundation which does what it claims and that is, it improves your skin!

There is also a thing out there called tinted moisturizer which is essentially foundation that is not as heavy as regular, straight-up “foundation”. However you can get the same effect if you simply mix your regular foundation with your moisturizer (a few drops of each in the palm of your hand), and that way you don’t have to spend EVEN MORE on something extra which is really meant for summer use anyway. That being said, with summer just now starting in 85% of the country, it wouldn’t be a total waste investing in a bottle of tinted moisturizer if you think you’re going to use it more often than not.

Cora, hope I’m not stepping on your toes here! Also I’m truly sorry if this has already been covered elsewhere in this amazing blog. 🙂

Feel free to email me if you have any more questions: sapsey72 [at] gmail [dot] com. ^.^

  19. I love your YouTube videos soooo much better then all the other ones. Why because they aren’t that fun you make them fun with the way you talk and little funny faces.Im so glad I came across your videos you helped me out with make up because I’m in beauty school and still have no clue how to do make up but you helped a lot.And also I feel like your just a friend that I would have yet to meet. Thanks for all your hard work on your videos.Best ever!!!!

  20. Cora,
Just wanted to say thanks for creating your blog and videos. The past couple of years have been really rough. To be honest I’m a recovering addict and I’ve been trying to look for healthy productive things to do with my time, that’s when I came upon one of your tutorials on youtube. I wanted to send you a message to let you know that you are making a difference in the lives of those who watch. I do go to therapy, but makeup is my refuge. Thanks for simply being a friendly face when I need one.
    Much Love, Alisha

  21. I have some milani products. For example I have several colors of the INFINITE Liquid eye liner. I love the colors but… They take so long to dry I stand there with a stupid hair dryer facing my eyes to dry it, otherwise it smudges and makes a huge mess. ANY TIPS? or relatively smudge proof liner ? Also it gets tacky and sticky after it dries.

  22. Totally just stumbled on your YouTube channel which led me here to your blog and I love it! I’m a makeup junkie from waaaaay back, and I wanted to tell you, *NICE JOB*!!! You are adorable and beautiful and your tutorials are well done. I have learned a lot and I look forward to more. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK! 😀

  23. I love your work it’s beautiful!! I love love love makeup, but want to be better at it! I wear Mac makeup and I love it. Just want to be more creative and learn more. I thought about HEX online makeup school, but I don’t know if I would benefit or if I should just practice more at home! Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  24. Can you do a tutorial for doll makeup? Or even better a bratz doll makeup tutorial. My friends and I are going as bratz dolls and I cannot find anything that will help me with a direction…

  25. Hi Cora!
Just wanted to thank you for awesome videos and tons of inspiration! 🙂
(Unfortunately) I’m from Sweden where we only have a few of the brands you mention in your videos, but hopefully some day soon I’ll visit the U.S. and come home with bags filled with MU from Target and Ulta (which I think are grocery stores that also sell make-up…?)!!
Also: you and I seem to have the exact same face tone which is nice, cus when I need a new foundation I can just check up what you wear in a video 🙂

Greetings from the cold north! /Julia

    Btw: all time favourite foundation?
